About this scholarship

St Cross College MPhil Scholarship

You will receive up to about 5,800 EUR per year (up to £5,000) for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programme at the University of Oxford. The funding covers the entire duration of your MPhil programme. St Cross College, one of Oxford’s graduate colleges, funds two of these scholarships each year from donations. The money helps to cover the high costs of postgraduate study, which for international students can amount to around £55,000 per year in total, comprising tuition fees and living costs.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are applying for an MPhil programme at Oxford or for the BPhil in Philosophy. An MPhil is a research-oriented Master’s programme that usually lasts two years.
  • Field of study: Your degree subject is in the humanities or social sciences, for example history, languages, politics or economics.
  • College choice: In your application for a Master’s degree at Oxford, you should list St Cross College as your first choice.
  • Nationality: You can apply from any country.

How to apply

There is no separate scholarship application form. You apply for your MPhil place via the University of Oxford’s postgraduate admissions system, list St Cross as your first choice, and submit your application by the University of Oxford’s deadline in January. Anyone who is offered a place will then automatically be considered for the scholarship.

How realistic are your chances?

Only two of these scholarships are awarded each year, and you must first secure a place on the highly competitive MPhil programme at Oxford, so the competition is fierce. There is no need to submit a separate application – your admission and academic record speak for themselves. If you clearly fall within the field of the humanities or social sciences and list St Cross as your first choice, you’ll be in the running without any extra effort.
