About this scholarship

Benefit

You have received an additional grant to fund a full-time PhD programme in the humanities or social sciences abroad. The Open Society Foundations provided this as supplementary support rather than full funding, so you were required to have other financial resources already in place. The grant covered up to half of your tuition fees, as well as living costs such as rent, health insurance and study materials. In addition, extra costs such as travel to your university, books and conference travel were covered. The funding was awarded on an annual basis. You were able to reapply for up to three years in total, but each renewal was subject to a new call for applications and was not guaranteed.

Eligibility

  • Degree: You have been accepted onto a full-time PhD programme at a recognised university.
  • Where you studied: The university had to be abroad, i.e. outside your home country.
  • Field of study: Humanities and social sciences only. Economics, computer science, engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, medicine and the arts were not funded.
  • Nationality: They came from a range of countries in South-Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Mongolia, North Africa and the Middle East. Members of minority groups were specifically encouraged to apply.
  • Financial need: You had to prove that you were unable to cover the costs yourself.
  • Commitment: Preference was given to applicants who have close ties to their home country or region and are actively involved in its development.

How to apply

The Open Society Foundations discontinued all their grant programmes in 2021, and this funding round also came to an end. There will be no further calls for applications, so you can no longer apply.
