What the Marshall Scholarship gives you

You will have your tuition fees fully covered and receive a monthly living allowance of £1,452 (about 1,690 EUR) outside London or £1,781 (about 2,070 EUR) in London to undertake postgraduate study in the United Kingdom. The funding covers the entire duration of your studies: 1 years for a one-year Master’s programme, 2 years for two Master’s programmes or a two-year Master’s programme, and up to 3 years for a PhD programme. In addition to the living allowance, you will receive return economy-class flights between the US and the UK, an annual book allowance, a grant for your thesis, research and travel grants, as well as coverage of your UK visa fees and the NHS health surcharge. Each year, up to 50 scholarships are awarded by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission, a UK government body funded by the UK government as a token of gratitude for the Marshall Plan.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a US citizen at the time of applying.
• Degree: At the time you commence your studies (September 2027), you must hold a first Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year US college or university, which you must have obtained after April 2024.
• Grades: At the time of your application, you must have a grade point average of at least 3.7 on a scale of 4.0. A rounded-up grade point average will not be taken into account.
• No prior UK study: You do not yet hold a UK university degree or an equivalent qualification, nor are you planning to obtain one, and you have not taken any GCSE or A-Level exams in the UK.
• Field of study: Open to all postgraduate programmes. Exceptions include a few specific types of programme: a second Bachelor’s degree, MBA programmes, the MSc in Financial Economics, professionally qualifying programmes such as medicine or law, and part-time or distance-learning programmes.
• Age: No age limit.

How to apply

You must apply online via the ASAMS system through your US university, which must endorse your application. The application deadline is 29 September 2026, 5 p.m. in your university’s time zone. You may only apply in one of eight US regions. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a regional interview in November before the final decision is made.

How realistic are your chances?

This is one of the most sought-after scholarships for Americans studying abroad: up to 50 places are available nationwide for the best graduates, with each university permitted to nominate only 24 applicants. Good grades are merely the entry ticket. The selection panels place just as much weight on leadership qualities and potential as an ambassador as they do on academic achievement. A clearly demonstrable track record of leadership, as well as a well-chosen field of study and university – particularly outside Oxford, Cambridge and London – will help you stand out from the crowd.
