Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Courses scholarship

You will receive a 962 EUR scholarship to take part in a four-week summer course in Lithuanian language and culture at a university or research institute in Lithuania. The Lithuanian government will also cover the course fees directly, so you will not have to pay any tuition fees yourself. You may choose one of six host institutions for the 2026 summer course, including Vilnius University, Klaipėda University and Vytautas Magnus University. Each of these institutions runs its course on its own dates between May and August. The programme is organised by the Lithuanian Education Exchanges Support Foundation. Travel and accommodation costs are not covered, and you cannot combine this scholarship with any other scholarship.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are studying, teaching or conducting research at a university or research institution outside Lithuania, or you are a foreign national of Lithuanian origin (a child, grandchild or great-grandchild of Lithuanians living abroad).
• Nationality: Open to all countries. Citizens of Russia and Belarus are not eligible to apply, nor are individuals who are studying or working at a Russian or Belarusian institution.
• Language level: Your level of Lithuanian is below C1. Native speakers and anyone whose level is C1 or higher are not eligible to take these courses.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Times funded before: You have received this scholarship fewer than three times since the summer of 2017.
• Priority: First-time applicants will be given priority, as will those who are already studying Lithuanian, Lithuanian history or culture in their home country. Citizens of certain countries (such as the USA, Ukraine, Japan, South Korea and Australia) will also be given priority.

How to apply

You must apply directly via the online system of ONE host university, either in English or Lithuanian. If you apply to more than one university, all your applications will be rejected. The application deadlines are in mid-March: on 16 March for Mykolas Romeris University, on 17 March for Klaipėda University, and on 18 March for the other four institutions.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is awarded on a highly selective basis. You must have valid reasons for learning the Lithuanian language and your level must be below C1, meaning that the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships. If you are applying for the first time and are already studying Lithuanian or Lithuanian culture, or if you come from one of the priority countries, your chances are good. Apply to the one institution that suits you best and make sure you meet their application deadline in mid-March.
