Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters scholarship

You will receive 1,400 EUR per month for up to 24 months, i.e. for the entire duration of a two-year Master’s programme. The scholarship also covers your tuition fees, travel and visa costs. It is funded by the EU through the Erasmus+ programme. It funds a joint Master’s programme run by a group of universities across several countries, enabling you to study in at least two countries and obtain a joint degree or multiple degrees from the partner universities. The University of the Algarve in Portugal runs or participates in a number of these programmes, particularly in the fields of marine sciences, water and coastal management, ecohydrology and analytical chemistry.

Who can apply

• Degree: You hold a bachelor’s degree or are in the final year of your bachelor’s degree programme and will complete your studies before the start of the master’s programme. An equivalent, state-recognised qualification will also be considered.
• Level: This funding is available exclusively for a Master’s degree programme; it does not apply to an undergraduate degree or a PhD.
• Where you study: You are studying abroad in at least two different countries. Neither of these may be your country of residence.
• Field of study: Each degree programme focuses on a specific subject area. At the University of the Algarve, options include marine biology, coastal and water management, ecohydrology and chemical regulation, amongst others.
• Nationality: Open to students from all over the world, with no restrictions based on nationality.
• Grades: The scholarships are awarded to students with outstanding achievements; therefore, very good academic results are required.

How to apply

You apply directly to the Master’s programme you wish to enrol on, rather than via a central application process with the EU. The application window usually runs from October to January for the following academic year. Each programme sets its own additional requirements and selection procedures.

How realistic are your chances?

The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to the best applicants, so good grades alone are not enough. The pool of applicants is diverse, as students from any country can apply. Your chances will improve if you focus on a specific, less competitive degree programme that matches your background perfectly, such as one of the Master’s programmes in marine or coastal sciences at the Algarve. Apply early, between October and January, and explain clearly and concisely why you are particularly well-suited to this specific programme.
