French Government Scholarships

You will receive a monthly living allowance for your studies in France: 900 EUR per month for Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, and 1,850 EUR per month for PhD programmes. The grant is awarded for the duration of your studies. You can extend it by submitting an application at least three months before it expires. You are also exempt from the CVEC fee for student life and from enrolment fees for a state-recognised degree at a public institution. You will receive temporary health insurance for the first few weeks until you are enrolled in the French social security system, as well as support in finding a room in a CROUS student hall of residence (state-run student accommodation). If the French Ministry covers your travel costs, Campus France will also book your flight in economy class. The scholarships are provided by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and are administered by Campus France.

Who can apply

• Where you go: You are studying, doing an apprenticeship or attending a language course in France.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. You must submit your application from your home country before you leave.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD student.
• Field of study: All degree programmes are eligible for the general scholarships. Some sub-programmes, such as ‘France Excellence Eiffel’, focus on specific subject areas.
• Country-specific rules: The French Embassy in your country sets the exact criteria (level, subject area, age), so these vary from place to place.

How to apply

You should submit your application directly to the French Embassy or Consulate in your home country via the Department for Cooperation and Cultural Affairs (SCAC). There is no standard form or deadline. Each embassy sets its own requirements and deadlines; you should therefore contact the relevant embassy well in advance of your planned departure. Successful applications are forwarded to Campus France.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a wide-ranging, well-known programme, but it is not a single selection process. Each embassy conducts its own selection process, with its own criteria and budget, so your actual chances depend on the programme offered in your country. If you meet the required standard and specialise in the subject area supported by your local embassy, and apply early, your prospects are good. Start by checking with the Campus France office in your country, as that is where the rules are set.
