About this scholarship
Benefit
You have been awarded a research grant to study the history of early Christianity in the East. The Royal Academy of Belgium awards this grant every two years; the next award will take place in 2026. The funding is intended to support research leading to a manuscript which the Academy will subsequently accept for publication in its own book series. The grant therefore funds both your research and its publication.
Eligibility
- Research topic: Your thesis should focus on the spread of Christianity in the East during the first eight centuries AD. It may also examine the religious, philosophical or social trends of the Hellenistic and Roman periods that shaped this development. Where two applications are of equal quality, preference will be given to the topic mentioned first.
- Field: History, religious studies or theology focused on the early Christian East.
- Goal of your project: Your aim is to produce a manuscript that is ready for publication in the Academy’s book series (Mémoires).
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Where you study: Any institution is fine.
How to apply
Send your application, along with the qualifications you want to present, to the Permanent Secretary of the Royal Academy of Belgium, or submit it through the Academy's website. The deadline is 15 December before the end of the two-year cycle, so 15 December 2025 for the 2026 round.
