Erasmus Mundus Postgraduate opportunities

Erasmus Mundus is a European mobility programme for higher education. If you are looking to do postgraduate studies in either another EU member state or a selected third country, the following will provide you with a brief overview of some of the options you have to fund such an endeavour.

Erasmus+ Masters Loans

Studying abroad can be expensive. To support you financially, the Erasmus+ programme offers students wanting to take full Masters level degrees abroad Erasmus-backed loans on more affordable conditions.
If you fulfil the necessary requirements you can apply for a loan up to €12,000 for a 1-year and €18,000 for a 2-year Master programme.

The necessary requirements are:

  1. The Master programme has to be in a different country from your country of residence
  2. You must not have obtained your Bachelor degree in the same country
  3. You have to be a resident of one of the Erasmus+ programme countries
  4. The successful completion of your undergraduate degree (Bachelor or equivalent)
  5. Acceptance for a full-time Master programme or equivalent at an Erasmus chartered Higher Education Institution

Other Erasmus Mundus funding opportunities

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree (EMJMD) offers EU-funded scholarships for designated programmes. A list of the programmes currently on offer can be found here.
If successful you can expect to be covered for your participation costs such as your tuition fees, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs of the course, a contribution to your travel and installation costs as well as a subsistence allowance of around €1,400 per month for the duration of the programme (typically up to 24 months, for a total of up to €33,600). Around 3,000 scholarships are awarded each year across more than 160 accredited programmes.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorates (EMJD) are no longer offered. The original Erasmus Mundus scheme ran from 2004 to 2013, and doctoral-level funding that was previously delivered through EMJD has since been replaced. PhD research is now funded through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (see below), while the Erasmus Mundus brand continues under Erasmus+ (2021-2027) exclusively through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM).

Another option to look into is Erasmus Mundus Partnerships. These intend to bring together higher education institutions from Europe and other selected regions of the world by managing mobility flows between two particular regions. These partnerships target members of all academic levels ranging from undergraduates to post-doctorates and even academic staff. The scholarships you can apply for here usually cover your costs for participation, subsistence and insurance as well as a contribution to your travel expenses.

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions

Under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) you can apply for Doctoral Networks and Postdoctoral Fellowships. These actions aim to support researchers from any country, at all stages of their careers, across all disciplines. MSCA is now the EU’s main channel for doctoral and postdoctoral training under Horizon Europe, with a budget of €6.6 billion for 2021-2027. Postdoctoral Fellowships typically provide funding of €235,000 to €370,000. If successful, you can expect generous research funding as well as additional opportunities to gain experience abroad and/or in the private sector, providing you with more versatile training which could aid your future career.
