About this scholarship

WBI short research grant in China (Master II)

You receive 1,300 EUR per month to cover your accommodation and living costs during a research stay in China lasting 3 to 6 months. On top of the monthly money, Wallonie-Bruxelles International (WBI) pays one return economy-class flight, your health, repatriation and liability insurance, and local travel costs against receipts. The Chinese authorities waive your university tuition fees. WBI runs the grant with the Belgian science fund (F.R.S.-FNRS) and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) to build research links between French-speaking Belgium and China.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You hold a Master II degree from a higher-education institution run or funded by the French Community of Belgium.
  • Timing: You finished that degree no more than 5 years ago.
  • Age: You are 35 or younger (this applies to the master and Chinese-language programmes).
  • Field of study: Your project fits one of the listed areas. These include IT and digital technology, agricultural technology, life sciences and health, new materials and nanotech, energy and environment, aerospace, logistics and transport, Chinese language, French language and francophone cultures, law, European studies and international relations, or economics and management. The partners can agree to accept other fields too.

How to apply

You submit two applications. Send the WBI file by email to WBI, and complete the CSC form online in English under agency number 0561 (Type A). You also need either an acceptance letter from a specific Chinese university, or a shortlist of three universities in at least two different cities. Note that applying through the Chinese EU Windows programme rules you out of this grant. The WBI deadline falls around 10 February and the CSC form around 15 February. WBI, the FNRS and the Chinese Embassy in Brussels then make the selection.
