What the Hezekiah Wardwell Scholarship offers

You will receive 1,000 EUR per month for further training or postgraduate study at a music academy, conservatoire or university in Germany. You will also receive a one-off lump sum of 250 EUR, as well as a travel allowance if you are coming from Spain. You may apply for one or two semesters (October to February or up to and including July of the following year). If you are awarded the full ten-month scholarship, you may spend up to five months in another European country, provided this is necessary for your studies – but not in Spain. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awards up to ten of these scholarships each year.

Who can apply

• Where you come from: You are a Spanish national, live mainly in Spain, or have completed your education in Spain.
• Field of study: You are studying, or have studied, music or musicology (the academic study of music).
• Study phase: This programme is designed to provide an in-depth exploration of the subject area or further training; however, it is not a first degree, and you are on the path to starting your career.
• Timing: You must have completed your musical or musicological training no later than three years before the start of the scholarship.
• A confirmed teacher: Before you apply, make an appointment with a recognised music teacher or an academic supervisor at a German institution.
• Language: Good German is recommended.
• Preference: Preference will be given to applicants who have not yet studied in Germany.

How to apply

The online application must be submitted by 10 January each year, once you have secured a place with a German host institution. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of April or early May and invited to a live audition, which takes place once a year in Madrid in late May or early June. The scholarship will be confirmed as soon as a German university of music, conservatoire or university has awarded you a firm place on a course.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility criteria for this scholarship are quite narrow. You must be from Spain, be working in the field of music or musicology, and have completed your studies within the last three years. This keeps the pool of applicants small, and with up to ten scholarships awarded each year, your chances are good if you meet the requirements. As the audition and a firm agreement with a German lecturer are crucial, your prospects depend on genuine talent and early preparation. You should therefore find your visiting lecturer well in advance of the January deadline.
