About this scholarship
Research Training Grants at the University of Jaén
You will receive full-time work contract with the University of Jaén for the completion of your doctoral thesis. The remuneration amounts to at least approximately 1,720 EUR gross per month (16,422 EUR gross per year in the 2014 round; in subsequent rounds, the national salary scale for early-career researchers applies). The contract runs for up to 4 years and will be renewed annually subject to a positive assessment of your progress. In the event of a disability of 50% or more, it is extended to 6 years. You will be accepted as a full member of one of the university’s research groups and will receive social security cover, paid leave, as well as parental or sick leave, during which the contract is suspended. In addition, you may undertake up to 60 hours of teaching per year. Funding is provided by the University of Jaén in Andalusia, Spain. Priority is given to doctoral theses with an international focus or those involving joint supervision.
Who can apply
- Degree: You have a university degree but do not yet hold a doctorate.
- Doctoral programme: You are enrolled on a PhD programme at the University of Jaén or are eligible to enrol.
- Field of study: Open to all disciplines. Over 50 research groups are taking part, ranging from biology, medicine, chemistry and engineering to linguistics, law, economics and the social sciences.
- Research group: You are affiliated with one of the eligible research groups or projects listed in the call for proposals.
- Nationality: All nationalities may apply.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via the Vice-Rectorate for Research at the University of Jaén, using the forms provided in the call for applications. The deadline for applications is 24 January. The ranking of applicants is based primarily on academic merit (75%), whilst the remainder is based on the assessment of the research group they are joining.
How realistic are your chances?
The selection criteria are very strict: there are only a handful of places available, and you must already be a member of a specific research group or a funded project at the University of Jaén. The selection process relies heavily on academic grades, so an excellent academic track record is crucial. If you have good grades and a research group has agreed to take you on, your prospects are good, as the pool of eligible applicants is small.
