About this scholarship

CEI CamBio Research Travel Grant

You will receive up to 3,000 EUR to fund a research placement abroad whilst you are studying for your PhD. This will cover the costs of travel, accommodation and meals whilst you are working at a research institution abroad. The grant is awarded as a one-off payment towards travel expenses. It is provided by CEI CamBio, an environmental research campus run by the Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Seville in collaboration with partner universities in Andalusia and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

Who can apply

  • Level: You are a PhD student and are in at least your second year of your PhD programme.
  • University: You are enrolled on a PhD programme in environmental sciences at one of the CEI-CamBio partner institutions: Pablo de Olavide University, the University of Almería, the University of Cádiz, the University of Córdoba, the University of Huelva, the International University of Andalusia, the University of Jaén, or the CSIC.
  • Topic: Your dissertation relates to one of CEI CamBio’s key focus areas, such as climate change, biodiversity, a just energy transition, agroecology, environmental education or the 2030 Agenda. Research projects relating to Central America and the Caribbean are preferred, but are not a prerequisite.
  • Where you go: The placement must take place at a research institution outside Spain.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted directly to CEI CamBio via its website by 10 February. You must submit your CV, your Master’s degree certificate, a letter of recommendation from your supervisor, written confirmation of admission from the host institution abroad, and a work plan.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must be a PhD student in a specific subject area, enrolled at one of the few Andalusian institutions, and writing a thesis that relates to the themes of the CEI CamBio. This keeps the pool of applicants small, but only a few grants are awarded per round. If you clearly meet the subject area and regional criteria – particularly with a focus on Central America or the Caribbean – and have already found a host institution, your chances are good.
