About this scholarship
UAB Photojournalism Grant
You will receive a discount of 1,725 EUR on your tuition fees. This amounts to half the cost of the Postgraduate Diploma in Photojournalism (dpF-UAB), which costs a total of 3,450 EUR. If you have already paid and enrolled, the university will refund you 50% as soon as the course begins. The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) is organising the award in collaboration with the management of its Diploma in Photojournalism programme. The course runs from February to June, with a final project due the following January. Lessons are held in Spanish.
Who can apply
- Degree or level: You hold a university degree (Master’s, Licentiate or Diploma). You may also apply without a university degree, provided you can demonstrate at least three years’ verifiable professional experience in a related field.
- Field of study: Any subject. Your degree subject does not necessarily have to be photography.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Language: Lessons are taught in Spanish, so you must be able to follow the course in Spanish.
- Your work: You must submit a photo essay comprising 20 photographs (in colour or black and white) on a single theme, together with a short text. You must also sign a declaration stating that the work is your own, has not been published previously and has not yet won any prizes.
How to apply
Please email your CV, the photo essay 20, the accompanying text and the signed declaration as a single ZIP file (maximum 10 MB) to the programme secretariat. The closing date for entries is 14 January. A three-member jury comprising practising photojournalists and the course leader will select one winner and two finalists. If the winner is unable to take part, the place will go to the next finalist.
How realistic are your chances?
The jury will focus primarily on the quality of your work rather than your grades, as this is a one-off scholarship awarded on the basis of a submitted photo essay. The Spanish language requirement and the effort involved in creating a thematic 20 photo series narrow down the pool of applicants and deter casual applicants. If your photographic work is compelling and you can commit to studying in Barcelona, you stand a real chance of success with a well-conceived photo essay.
