Oulu University Scholarship Foundation - Scholarship (University of Oulu)

W.J. Kaipainen Fund grant (University of Oulu)

You receive a one-off grant of roughly 2,000 EUR to 5,000 EUR, paid as a single lump sum, to carry out medical research at the University of Oulu, mainly in internal medicine. The money comes from the W.J. Kaipainen Fund, one of 25 named donor funds run by the Oulu University Scholarship Foundation (Oulun yliopiston tukisäätiö). The Foundation pays out 150,000 EUR to 250,000 EUR across all its funds each year, mostly for doctoral research. Its Executive Committee sets the exact amount for each researcher.

Who can apply

• Where you research: You carry out your research at the University of Oulu in Finland.
• Field of study: Medical research, particularly in the field of internal medicine (the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the internal organs).
• Level: You are undertaking a PhD or a Master’s thesis (a separate degree programme).
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
• No parallel job: You will not be in an employment relationship with the University of Oulu for the duration of the scholarship.

How to apply

For doctoral research, the call opens once a year, around April, through the Foundation's online grant system. You also ask your supervisor to add a statement there. The faculty reviews and ranks the applications, then the Executive Committee decides who is funded. Master's thesis grants run on a separate schedule with four calls a year, in March, May, September and December. The next one runs 15 to 30 September 2026, with applications sent by 30 September 2026.
