About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive 1,000 EUR per month for a research stay of up to 3 months at the Finland Institute in Berlin. The grant covers your travel and accommodation costs. You will also have access to an office with Wi-Fi at the Institute, which is open on weekdays from 9 to 5 and where you can hold your own meetings, workshops and seminars. Berlin is close to universities, libraries and archives, which is helpful if you wish to research German literature or exchange ideas with colleagues. The scholarship is awarded by the Emil Öhmann Foundation, which is administered by the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters (Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia).

Eligibility

  • Who can apply: You are a researcher at a Finnish university. PhD candidates can apply too.
  • Your topic: Your work focuses on the German language or the culture of German-speaking Europe.
  • When you go: Your stay will take place from 1 November 2025 to 30 June 2026 at the Finnish Institute in Berlin.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are employed at a Finnish university.

How to apply

Please email your application to the Institute by 31 May. For the 2026 round, you can apply from 24 April to 31 May 2026. Please include a short statement of no more than one page in Finnish, Swedish, English or German, explaining why you would like to work at the Institute and how the visit will benefit your research. Please also attach your CV and a list of your academic publications. Decisions will be made in October, and successful applicants will be notified personally.
