Benefit

You will receive a monthly grant to fund your PhD in the humanities or social sciences in France. The amount depends on your financial circumstances and is therefore not fixed. No specific amount is mentioned in the sources. The grant is administered by CROUS, the national network of student services organisations, which manages student financial support throughout France.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a French citizen.
• Degree so far: You hold a DEA or a research master’s degree 2 (Master’s 2 in Research). These are the qualifications required for a PhD.
• What you study: You are writing a doctoral thesis in the humanities (lettres) or the social sciences and humanities (sciences humaines).
• Where you study: You are enrolled at a doctoral school (école doctorale) in France.
• Financial need: As your income and assets will be assessed, this offer is aimed at students who need financial support.
• Academic record: Your DEA or Master’s results are taken into account, and your supervisor must consider your dissertation topic to be appropriate.

You should submit your application to the CROUS office for your region of study or to the social services department at your own university. Ask them for the latest forms and the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very restrictive. You must be a French national, have already completed a DEA or a research-based Master’s degree, and be enrolled at a French doctoral school in the humanities or social sciences. As a result, the pool of eligible candidates is small. If you meet these criteria, can demonstrate a financial need and have a supervisor who supports your research topic, your chances are good. The key factors are a very good Master’s degree result and a clearly relevant research topic.
