About this scholarship
Maison Française d'Oxford scholarship
You will receive up to 9,000 EUR for a research stay of up to six months at the Maison Française d’Oxford, a French research centre in Oxford, England. The exact amount depends on the duration of your stay. The scholarship is awarded by the Chancellerie des universités de Paris, an institution affiliated with the Sorbonne. During your stay, you will be integrated into a CNRS research team and will have access to a library containing 45,000 volumes, your own research room and Oxford’s academic network. As a PhD student, you will also have access to the colleges of Oxford and the Bodleian Library. You can rent a room in the city centre during your stay.
Who can apply
- Level: You are a PhD student and are enrolled for the academic year 2026/2027. Students with a PhD contract are also eligible. Postdoctoral researchers are not eligible to apply.
- Where you study: You must be enrolled at a university or higher education institution in the Paris region (Île-de-France): at one of the 15 universities in Île-de-France or at one of the six major higher education institutions, including EHESS, INALCO, EPHE, Sciences Po, the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle and the École nationale des chartes.
- Subject: Your dissertation should relate to the Centre’s and the University of Oxford’s areas of expertise, such as literary studies, history, the history of science, law, classical studies or political science. Interdisciplinary work relating to science and technology is also welcome.
- Focus of research: Projects with an international, European or Franco-British focus are preferred; however, this is an advantage rather than a requirement.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they meet the above entry requirements.
How to apply
You do not apply directly to the law firm. Please first submit your application documents to the Graduate School or the PhD office at your institution. They will review your application and forward it to the online platform. The application deadline is 24 April 2026, and the winner will be selected and notified at the end of June 2026.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is very selective: only PhD students at a specified list of institutions in the Paris region who are conducting research in certain fields of the humanities and social sciences are eligible to apply, and only one scholarship is awarded each year. The small, highly calibre group of applicants is matched by the single place on offer, meaning that competition amongst suitable candidates is very fierce. A clearly defined doctoral research project with an international or Franco-British focus is what sets the applicants apart.
