About this award / prize

Benefit

You will win a cash prize if you are named ‘Outstanding Speaker’ at the ‘Annual Gala Moot’, the moot court competition organised annually by the UCC School of Law. A moot is a simulated court case in which you argue a legal issue before real judges. The exact amount varies from year to year, but the fact box gives a guide figure of 500 EUR. The prize is awarded once a year and is funded by the solicitor Sally Donegan in memory of the Cork-based solicitor James D. Donegan. In some years, the judges do not award the prize if they conclude that no student has met the required standard.

Eligibility

  • University: You’re studying law at University College Cork (UCC).
  • Level: You are a law student in your first cycle.
  • How you get in: You are taking part in the Moot module and have been selected as one of the four finalists who will present their cases at the annual Gala Moot. There is no open application form.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at UCC.

How to apply

You cannot apply directly. Finalists come through the Law School's moot module. The four who reach the Gala Moot argue before one or two members of the Irish judiciary, who pick the Outstanding Speaker. The Gala Moot is held once a year at a Cork courtroom.
