University of Limerick - The Michael Hillery and Jacinta O'Brien Athletics Scholarship

What you get

At the University of Limerick, you will receive a sports support package worth approximately 583 EUR per month (around 7,000 EUR), which is awarded for 12 months. It covers your on-campus accommodation costs and includes a free full membership of the UL Sport Arena. You will also receive professional coaching, priority access to physiotherapy, support from sports scientists, nutritional advice and an annual grant of 500 EUR towards your training costs. If you qualify for the World University Games, UL may also provide you with additional funding for travel and competition costs. This award honours two late members of the UL community: Michael Hillery and Jacinta O’Brien.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You study full-time at the University of Limerick, or you are applying to start there through the CAO (the Irish central admissions system) or as a transfer student.
• Level: You may be either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s student.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Your sport: You are a registered member of an Irish athletics association recognised by the Irish Sports Council.
• Your results: In the year prior to your application, you either took part in or won a World or European Championship in the U20 or U23 age group, or you represented Ireland in athletics at senior level.

How to apply

You apply online once for the general UL sports scholarship and will automatically be considered for this sports funding at the same time. For the start of studies in September 2027, the application period begins on 4 January 2027 and ends on 5 March 2027.
