What the fee exemption gives you

At the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (unibz) in Italy, you pay no tuition fees. You only pay a stamp duty of 16 EUR per year, a small official document fee. Without the exemption, tuition fees are normally 600 EUR per instalment, payable twice a year (higher if you exceed the standard duration of study). The exemption may apply for the duration of your entire degree programme, up to 72 months. The university grants it to two groups of students.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.
• Two ways in: Either you have a disability recognised under Italian law 104/1992 (or a degree of disability of 66% or higher), or you are a foreign student receiving a scholarship from the Italian government.
• Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
• Nationality: The route via a disability is open to students of any nationality. The route via a government scholarship is intended for international students who receive an Italian government scholarship.

How to apply

If you are eligible for exemption on the grounds of a disability, please submit the certificate from the health authority to the Student Registry before the deadline for the first instalment. If you receive a scholarship from the Italian government, please apply for exemption at the Student Registry. In both cases, you will then only pay the stamp duty of 16 EUR.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a means-tested grant, but an automatic entitlement. If you belong to one of the two groups and submit the relevant document by the deadline, the exemption will be granted. There is neither a ranking list nor a selection process, so the only real risk is missing the deadline for the first instalment. Submit your certificate or apply well in advance to be on the safe side.
