Groningen University Fund travel grant

You receive a one-off travel grant of up to 650 EUR for a study trip inside Europe, or up to 750 EUR for a trip outside Europe. As an outstanding student, you can instead apply for 250 EUR towards a conference (in the Netherlands or abroad) or a summer or winter school. The money comes from the Groningen University Fund (GUF), a foundation linked to the University of Groningen that supports its students. The grant covers individual study parts such as an internship, and extracurricular activities such as company visits abroad. It does not cover regular courses from your programme.

Who can apply

• University: You study for a Bachelor's, Master's or MD/PhD at the University of Groningen (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen).
• What it funds: You travel abroad for study, research, an internship or an exchange that is part of your studies, or you attend a conference, summer school or winter school.
• Grades: You meet the required grade average. Marks count as they are and are never rounded up.
• Destination: Your destination has a green or yellow travel-safety code from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
• Field of study: All subjects can apply.
• How often: Across your whole time as a student, you can get one travel grant and one conference grant, no more.

How to apply

Send a complete digital application to the fund's secretariat by email, at least 6 weeks before your trip or event starts. Only complete applications are processed. You get a confirmation within 5 working days.

How realistic are your chances?

The fund awards only a limited number of grants each year, so a clear, complete application that meets the grade requirement stands the best chance. Because only Groningen students can apply, the pool is smaller than for national scholarships. Apply well before the 6-week deadline, and show that your trip is a genuine study component rather than a regular course.
