Amsterdam University Fund travel grant for PhD candidates

You get a one-off travel grant of 550 to 1,000 EUR towards a research trip abroad. The amount depends on where you go and how long you stay:

• 550 EUR for a stay in Europe under 3 months
• 650 EUR for a longer stay in Europe
• 800 EUR for a trip outside Europe under 3 months
• 1,000 EUR for a longer stay outside Europe

This is a single contribution, not full cover. You pay the rest from your own research budget. The grant is funded by donors to the Amsterdam University Fund (AUF). You can use it for research at a university abroad or to present at a conference abroad.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a PhD candidate (promovendus) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
• Purpose of the trip: The trip serves your PhD research, either as a research stay at a foreign university or a conference presentation abroad.
• Where you go: The destination is abroad, anywhere in or outside Europe.
• Confirmed trip: You have proof of admission from the university you will visit, or an invitation or acceptance for the conference.
• Own contribution: Your budget plan shows that your own research budget covers the rest of the costs.
• Field of study: All research fields can apply.

How to apply

You apply online and upload your documents as PDFs. The form is in English, but attachments may be in Dutch. Each round has a deadline tied to your departure date. For example, apply by 1 January 2026 if you leave from February 2026 onwards. A committee reviews applications, and you usually hear back by email within 14 days of the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is narrowly targeted: only UvA PhD candidates with a confirmed research trip can apply, so the pool is limited. The Fund runs many rounds a year but receives a lot of applications, and the amount per round can drop if the budget runs short. If you clearly meet the conditions and submit a complete, well-argued application, your prospects are good.
