Bekker-la Bastide-Fonds study grant

You get a one-off cash gift for your study costs. This Rotterdam foundation gives it to students who cannot cover their studies otherwise. There is no fixed amount. The sum is worked out for your situation. As a guide, in 2023/2024 the foundation gave 71 grants for studying in the Netherlands, averaging about 1,587 EUR each, and 55 grants for study or internships abroad, averaging about 1,278 EUR each. The money is a gift, not a loan, so you do not pay it back.

Who can apply

• Where you study: For the home grant, you study at a state-recognised university or hogeschool (university of applied sciences) in Rotterdam or Amsterdam.
• Full-time: You are enrolled full-time, have already made a successful start, and expect to finish on time.
• Financial need: You can no longer fund your studies yourself or with your parents' help. You have already used every option through DUO, the Dutch student finance body, including the tuition-fee loan.
• Study abroad option: Instead, you can apply for a study period or internship abroad of at least 13 weeks that earns ECTS credits toward your Dutch degree.
• Foreign students: You can apply only for your final year of study in Rotterdam or Amsterdam, not for going abroad. Second degrees and postdoctoral training are not supported.

How to apply

You apply online through the foundation's website. A dean or staff member of your school must back your application. For a study or internship abroad, hand in the full application at least 2 months before you leave. The board meets seven times a year, and decisions can take up to 90 days.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is aimed at a narrow group: you must study in Rotterdam or Amsterdam and prove real financial need after using all your DUO options. If you clearly meet those conditions and can document the shortfall, your prospects are good, since the foundation awards hundreds of grants each year. Apply early, and for a trip abroad well before the 2-month deadline.
