What you get

You get a one-off grant of up to 6,000 EUR per year to help you finish a university degree in the Netherlands. On average students receive around 3,000 EUR. It is a gift, not a loan, so you never pay it back. You can reapply for a further year if you still need support. The money comes from the Groesbeek-Assenbroek Stichting, an Amsterdam foundation running since 1949. In the 2024-2025 academic year it awarded 95,520 EUR to 33 students, and it usually supports around 50 to 60 students a year.

Who can apply

• Type of study: You study at a state-recognised Dutch research university (WO, wetenschappelijk onderwijs). Universities of applied sciences (HBO) do not qualify.
• Where you study: Your university is based in the European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
• Financial need: You can show that you are short of money and have no other way to fund your studies.
• Field of study: Any subject qualifies.

How to apply

You apply online between 1 March and 1 June. Postal applications are not accepted. You must attach a recommendation letter from your student dean (studentendecaan, a staff member who advises students). Without it, the foundation will not look at your case. The board decides twice a year, in spring and summer.

How realistic are your chances?

The conditions are fairly narrow: you must study at a Dutch research university and prove real financial need, so fewer people apply than for open scholarships. With around 50 to 60 grants each year, your prospects are reasonable if you clearly meet the conditions and can document your need. The dean's recommendation is essential, so line it up early.
