Wilhelmina E. Jansenfonds scholarship

You receive a grant to continue your studies or do research abroad on a topic linked to the Russian language or Russian culture. You pick your own destination and plan your own stay, as long as the activities clearly connect to Russian language or culture. The foundation does not publish the amount or the length of funding. You set out in your application what you plan to do and what you hope to achieve. The scholarship comes from the Wilhelmina E. Jansen foundation, which supports cultural ties between the Netherlands and Russia. Leiden University's Department of Russian Studies runs it.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are a Master's student, or a recent graduate, of the Russian and Eurasian Studies programme at Leiden University.
• Where you go: You use the grant abroad, at institutions you choose yourself.
• Topic: Your planned study or research clearly connects to Russian language or Russian culture.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Grades: Your academic results count in the selection.
• Bonus: If you plan to start a PhD soon, you are especially encouraged to apply.

How to apply

You apply to the Department of Russian Studies. Send your CV, a copy of your diploma if you already have one, and a detailed statement. In it, describe how you will use the grant, what you want to achieve, which institutions you plan to visit and any contacts you have made. A selection committee of department staff decides. No deadline is currently fixed.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut very narrowly. It is only for students and graduates of one specific Leiden Master's programme whose plans tie into Russian language or culture, so very few people are eligible and the competing group is tiny. If you fit that profile and can set out a clear, concrete plan, your prospects are good, and planning a PhD works in your favour.
