KNAW Ter Meulen Beurs

You get up to 35,000 EUR for a research visit at a university or research institute outside the Netherlands. The stay lasts between 1 and 12 consecutive months and must start within one year of the award. The grant covers your return travel (train or economy-class flight), accommodation abroad and basic living costs like food, insurance and local transport. This applies if you receive no salary or other income during the visit. The money goes directly to your Dutch university or institute, not to you personally. The award comes from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and is given once a year. Research materials and running costs back in the Netherlands are not covered.

Who can apply

• Field of study: Your work is in medical, biomedical or biological research linked to paediatrics (children's medicine) or a related area.
• Career stage: You are doing a PhD, or you finished your PhD no more than four years before the year you apply.
• Where you are based: You are affiliated with a university or scientific institute in the Kingdom of the Netherlands during the funded visit.
• Where you go: Your research visit is at an institution abroad, outside the Netherlands.
• One time only: You can receive this grant only once.

How to apply

You apply by email to the KNAW science funds office using the official application form, in Dutch or English. The next round opens on 1 February 2027. A three-member committee reviews the applications, and you hear the result within two months of the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant targets a narrow group: you must work in paediatric-related research, be an early-career researcher based at a Dutch institution and have a concrete plan for a visit abroad. That keeps the applicant pool small compared with open scholarships. If you clearly fit the field and career stage and submit a well-argued, feasible plan with a clear budget, your prospects are good.
