General Description

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) scholarships are offered to students enrolled in specific subjects at the University of Birmingham. Applicants who want to be considered for this highly competitive award must be admitted into select postgraduate and doctorate programmes. They must also fulfill the benchmark criteria established by the university. Successful applicants are awarded approximately £13,726 as a stipend for the annual Research Council. The amount can also be used to cover costs associated with research and bench fees. An additional £3,000 is granted to successful Economics and Advance Quantitative Methods applicants. Successful applicants who receive the studentship get financial assistance in difficult language training, funding for overseas studies, and also a Research Training Support Grant.

A first class or upper second class honours degree is essential. In the absence of satisfactory academic qualifications, relevant work experience can also be considered provided that the applicant has been involved in different relevant societies as a member. Candidates are selected according to the benchmark criteria. This is assessed based on proposal, preparation, place and person. Only applicants pursuing postgraduate training or doctoral research are considered. They must hold a place at the University of Birmingham at the time of applying for the scholarship. It is open to UK, EU and international students. However, international students are only eligible to apply for Economics’ awards and no other ESRC scholarships once they are involved in projects that include Advanced Quantitative Methods.
