About this award / prize
Bror Holmberg Medal
You are to receive a medal from the Swedish Chemical Society (Svenska Kemisamfundet) for outstanding contributions to chemical research. The Society established this prize in 1966 to honour Bror Holmberg, a former chairman who was renowned for his work in the fields of organic sulphur chemistry, kinetic analytical methods and lignin chemistry. It is usually awarded every three years. In exceptional cases, it may be awarded annually or every two years. Recent laureates include Janos Hajdu of Uppsala University (2024), who was honoured for the development of X-ray free-electron laser technology, and Kristina Edström of Uppsala University (2023), who was recognised for her battery research. This is an honour, not a cash prize: no monetary award is attached to it.
Who can receive it
- Field: Chemistry. The medal recognises outstanding scientific achievements in chemical research.
- Career stage: You are an established researcher with an extensive body of work; you are not a student. Previous winners have been renowned professors.
- Nationality: Any nationality may be selected. The prize winners are usually employed at Swedish universities.
How it is awarded
You cannot apply for this award yourself. There is neither an open call for applications nor a deadline for applications. A medals committee of the Swedish Chemical Society selects the winner and announces its decision when the medal is awarded.
How realistic are your chances?
This is a selective award presented approximately every three years to a scientist who is selected by a committee rather than through an application process. The laureates are leading chemists who can look back on decades of recognised research work. It is not possible to apply directly for this award. It is awarded in recognition of a long-standing research career.
