Marcus Wallenberg Foundation scholarship for master studies abroad

You will receive a scholarship to fund a Master’s degree at a leading university outside Sweden in the field of ‘International Industrial Entrepreneurship’. The amount of the scholarship is not fixed. It will be determined on a case-by-case basis based on a cost estimate you submit and will therefore depend on your tuition fees and living costs at the university you are attending. The scholarship covers your entire period of study abroad, ranging from one full academic year up to two years. Payment is made in several instalments: half at the start, 40% halfway through the period, and the final instalment 10% after you have submitted a written report on your studies. The foundation was established in 1982 by Swedish companies and private individuals. In 2025, it awarded 43 Master’s scholarships with a total value of over 51 million SEK.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Swedish citizen.
• Degree: You already hold a Swedish bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent qualification) from a Swedish university or university of applied sciences.
• Work experience: You have several years’ professional experience in the private sector and/or public administration.
• Where you go: You are studying at a prestigious university outside Sweden, for example in the UK, another European country, the US, Japan or Australia. The Foundation publishes a list of eligible universities, including Oxford, the LSE, Harvard, MIT, ETH Zurich and INSEAD.
• Field of study: Any subject is suitable, provided your degree programme focuses on industrial entrepreneurship.
• Timing: Your period of study must comprise at least one continuous academic year abroad and must still be in the future. Study programmes that are already underway or have been completed are not eligible for funding, nor are work placements, final-year dissertations or short study trips.
• Preference: If you do not yet hold a master’s degree from a foreign university, you will be given priority. If you run your own business and would like to specialise abroad, you are also welcome to apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s online application portal. The application window opens on 15 March and closes on 15 April at 13:00. Incomplete applications will not be processed. You will be notified of the decision following the Foundation’s board meeting.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is highly selective. You must be a Swedish national, hold a Swedish bachelor’s degree and have relevant work experience, and you must intend to study at a specific top-tier university abroad, which means the pool of eligible applicants is limited. However, as these universities are very selective and the scholarship is highly regarded, there is genuine competition amongst suitable applicants. If you clearly meet the criteria, can present a convincing study plan and do not yet hold a master’s degree from abroad, your chances are good. It is advisable to apply early within the short, one-month application window.
