Heriot-Watt University Bursary

You will receive up to about 3,630 EUR (£3,100) per year to cover your living costs. The money is paid out in three instalments per academic year, usually in October, February and April. The amount depends on your household income:

• Around 3,630 EUR (£3,100) per year if your household income is £25,000 or less
• Around 2,460 EUR (£2,100) if it is between £25,001 and £35,000
• Around 1,290 EUR (£1,100) if it is between £35,001 and £42,600

You can receive it during academic years 1 to 4 of your degree programme. The academic year 5 is excluded. Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh funds the scholarship.

Who can apply

• University: You are a full-time student at Heriot-Watt University on its UK campus.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s student.
• Where you are from: You are resident in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. This means that you are classified as ‘Rest of the United Kingdom’ and must pay the full tuition fees of £9,535..
• Financial need: According to the assessment by the student finance authority, your household income is £42,600 or less.
• Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
• Repeating or on placement: You retain your entitlement during an exchange programme, a work placement, a sandwich course or a course at another campus, as well as if you repeat an academic year, provided you remain a full-time student.

How to apply

You do not need to submit a separate application. You will receive the grant automatically once ‘Student Finance’ has assessed your household income. All you need to do is give ‘Student Finance’ permission to pass this information on to the university.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competitive grant. If you meet the relevant income criteria, are studying full-time and fall within the relevant income bracket, you will receive the grant automatically, without any selection process taking place. The only thing you can influence is ensuring that ‘Student Finance’ has assessed your income and that you agree to the results being passed on to the university. If you withdraw from your course early, you may have to repay part of the funding you have already received.
