About this scholarship

What you get

For the four-year DPhil programme in Management at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, you will receive full funding. A DPhil is a doctoral degree awarded by Oxford in place of a PhD. The funding covers your tuition fees as well as a living allowance, usually for the full four years. The living allowance is at least approximately EUR 25,200 per year (£21,805). As the department offers only a limited number of places, most admitted students receive full funding. You will also be asked to apply for additional funding from the University, the college and external bodies, which the department will then combine with its own funding.

In addition, there are several named scholarships. The ‘Academic Futures’ scholarships offer students from under-represented groups – British students of Black or mixed heritage, refugees and displaced persons, students from British foster care, and British students of Bangladeshi and Pakistani descent – the same scholarship package (tuition fees plus a living costs allowance of at least approximately 25,200 euros). Green Templeton College also offers DPhil scholarships to applicants who have been offered a place.

Who can apply

  • Programme: You are applying for the four-year, full-time DPhil programme in Management, which is taught on campus in Oxford.
  • Field of study: Economic and Management Research.
  • Grades: You must hold a good bachelor’s degree (a British 2.1, a GPA of 3.5 or an equivalent qualification) and, as a rule, have achieved a ‘Distinction’ in your master’s degree. Outstanding applicants who have completed a relevant Bachelor’s degree programme directly will also be considered.
  • Tests: You have GMAT or GRE results. If you are not from a predominantly English-speaking country, you will also need to take an English language test.
  • Written work: You must submit three written pieces of work, including a well-developed research proposal, as well as three academic references.
  • Nationality: Open to all nationalities. As each ‘Academic Futures’ scholarship is aimed at a specific target group, these scholarships are an exception.
  • Applying for the funding: The main funding for PhD students is automatically taken into account when you apply. For ‘Academic Futures’, please provide details of your background on the application form. Green-Templeton scholarships are awarded by invitation once you have been offered a place on the programme.

How to apply

Apply for the DPhil in Management via the University of Oxford’s postgraduate application portal. By doing so, you will automatically be considered for the main funding scheme. The application deadline for ‘Academic Futures’ for the next cycle is 11 December. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview in late January or early February; final decisions will be made by the end of February.

How realistic are your chances?

Competition is fierce. The degree programme offers a total of only around nine places across the Management and Finance specialisms combined – with around 70 applicants per year – and securing funding is extremely competitive. However, most students who are admitted receive full funding, so it is gaining admission that is the difficult part, not the subsequent funding. A compelling research proposal and excellent grades are the most important factors. If you belong to one of the ‘Academic Futures’ groups, this narrows down the field of applicants and improves your chances.
