City of Graz - Herbert Eichholzer award

What you get

You will win 2,500 EUR, which will be paid out as a one-off cash prize for winning a student design competition at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz). The competition awards three prizes of 2,500 EUR each for first, second and third place, bringing the total prize money to 7,500 EUR. This is a one-off prize for an outstanding competition entry, not a monthly scholarship. The City of Graz funds the prize through its Cultural Affairs Office, and the Faculty of Architecture at Graz University of Technology organises the competition every two years, in odd-numbered years.

Who can apply

• University and subject: You are studying architecture at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz).
• How you win it: You are taking part in the Faculty of Architecture’s design competition, and the jury selects your project as one of the winning entries.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying architecture at Graz University of Technology.

How to apply

Please register for the competition by email with the organising institute at Graz University of Technology. The closing date for entries is 1 August at 12:00. You will submit your design model later in the autumn. A jury will assess all entries anonymously and propose the winners; the Graz City Council will then confirm the prizes.

How realistic are your chances?

This competition is very restricted in scope. Only architecture students at Graz University of Technology are eligible to enter, and only in the odd-numbered years when the competition takes place. The field of entrants is small, but you must submit a complete competition entry, including a physical model which is tested for fire resistance, weight and sound insulation, amongst other things. If your design is convincing and you put in a lot of effort, you have a real chance of being among the three winners.
