About this grant / loan

What you get

You will receive 650 EUR per month for up to 12 months. This gives you two options: Either you can undertake a specialised course lasting up to one year at an educational institution other than the one where you obtained your first degree, or you can carry out a study-related project, to be completed within that year, to prepare yourself for a career in the arts or freelance work. The funding comes from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF). The grants are awarded by the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw).

Who can apply

  • University: You are studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw).
  • Degree level: You have already obtained your first degree. This means that doctoral, Master’s or postgraduate programmes at the mdw are not funded.
  • Field of study: Every subject taught at the mdw.
  • Nationality: You are a national of Austria, an EU or EEA country, or Switzerland. Non-EU citizens and stateless persons who are treated as equivalent under the Austrian Student Finance Act are also eligible.
  • Your plan: You have a specific plan for developing your artistic career, whether that be a specialist course at another institution or a project that you will complete within 12 months.

How to apply

Please submit an application form and a funding plan to the mdw StudienCenter. The deadline is 13 June.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is awarded on a highly selective basis. You must already be studying at the mdw, have already obtained your first degree, and submit a clear study or project plan; consequently, only a small number of people are eligible. If you meet these requirements and submit a convincing plan with a sound funding proposal, your chances are good. In some years, the Ministry does not award these scholarships; you should therefore check whether a call for applications is currently open before submitting your application.
