About this grant / loan
What you get
If you organise a compulsory work placement or clinical rotation abroad yourself, you will receive a monthly living allowance. In Europe, this amounts to about 470 to 520 EUR per month, depending on the country. Outside Europe, you will receive 700 EUR per month. You will also receive a one-off travel allowance: 150 EUR within Europe or 700 EUR worldwide. The placements last between 2 weeks and 2 months. The scholarship is awarded by the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni). It is called ‘Free Mover’ as it covers part of your studies at a host university abroad with which Vetmeduni does not have an existing exchange agreement.
Who can apply
- University: You are a full-time student at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna.
- Programme: You are studying veterinary medicine, biomedicine and biotechnology, comparative biomedicine or digitalisation in veterinary medicine (Precision Animal Health).
- Purpose: The trip forms part of a compulsory course or a compulsory placement included in your study programme, such as Clinical Placement I, a practical placement or technical training.
- Study timing: At the time of your application, you have not yet exceeded the minimum duration of study plus one semester for your stage of study.
- Where you go: You can go anywhere in Europe or around the world, but not to your home country. Work placements in your home country are never funded.
- Other funding: You cannot combine this with Austrian student finance or another exchange programme such as Erasmus+. If you are eligible for one of these grants for the trip, you must claim that one instead.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via the ‘Mobility-Online’ portal. You may apply at any time, but no later than 2 months before the start of your stay. You will need an official invitation from your host, setting out the programme, the learning objectives and the exact dates. The Office for International Relations will review your application and make a decision within one month.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is open exclusively to students at Vetmeduni who are undertaking a specific compulsory placement abroad; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you are enrolled on one of the degree programmes listed, have a confirmed host organisation and are still within the standard duration of your degree programme, your chances are good. Apply early, as funding will be exhausted as soon as the budget allocated for the relevant period has been used up.
