About this scholarship

What the Auslandsateliers scholarship gives you

For a working stay in an artist’s studio abroad, which usually lasts between 1 and 4 months, you will receive grant of 1,000 to 6,500 EUR. The amount depends on your destination. A short one-month stay in Sardinia is remunerated at around 1,500 EUR. A longer or more distant stay is remunerated at a higher rate, for example around 6,000 EUR for four months in Paris or 6,500 EUR for eight weeks in Mérida. In most cases, the Province of Salzburg also provides you with a studio and accommodation for one person. The destinations change slightly each year and have so far included, amongst others, Berlin, Budapest, Mérida, Paliano, Paris, Sardinia, Tainan, Tirana and Varanasi. The funding covers your travel and living expenses, so that you can work, develop your craft and forge international contacts.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are an artist or curator in any artistic discipline, unless otherwise stated in a specific section.
  • Link to Salzburg: You must meet one of the following three criteria: You were born in Salzburg and can provide evidence of a further biographical connection to the city. Or you have had your main place of residence in Salzburg for at least two years. Or your artistic work has been centred on Salzburg over the past two years, as evidenced by exhibitions, performances or presentations.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they meet the above-mentioned connection to Salzburg.
  • How often: From 2020 onwards, you may apply for a stay abroad no more than three times within a seven-year period. You may not submit a further application for a destination for which you have already received funding.
  • Availability: The dates for each studio are fixed and cannot be moved, so you must be free to travel then.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted by email to the Provincial Government’s Office for Art and Culture. Please attach your portfolio, a letter of motivation, proof of your connection to Salzburg, and the signed form stating your chosen destination and the period of your stay. The application deadlines are 23 February 2026 and 30 September 2026. An independent panel will select the scholarship recipients, and you will be informed of the result in writing after the deadline has passed.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is highly selective. You must demonstrate a clear connection to Salzburg and apply for a specific studio with fixed dates, meaning that the pool of eligible artists is small. If you do indeed meet the Salzburg criteria and your portfolio is a good fit for the destination, your chances are good. Choosing a less obvious destination and being available during the specified dates will work in your favour.
