About this grant / loan

What you get

The province of Styria (a region in Austria) covers part of the costs of publishing your academic work, such as a book, a monograph or a peer-reviewed article. There is neither a fixed amount nor full funding. The grant covers part of your costs, the amount of which depends on your cost breakdown. The programme has a budget of 75,000 EUR per funding round, i.e. 150,000 EUR per year, which is allocated among the selected projects. If your publication generates a profit, you must repay the amount in full or in part.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are a researcher, whether you are already established or at the start of your career. Only academic authors may apply; publishers and printers are not eligible.
  • Early-career limit: If you are considered a career starter, you will have completed your degree no more than 4 years ago.
  • Link to Styria: You are employed by a Styrian institution or are otherwise involved in research in Styria. Research carried out at institutions outside Styria is not eligible for funding.
  • What gets funded: The publication must be the result of research carried out in Styria. Funding may be provided for the publication of a master’s thesis, diploma thesis or doctoral thesis that has already been approved, but not for the writing of the thesis itself.
  • Field of study: Applicants from all disciplines are welcome to apply.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Timing: You must submit your application before the publication is finalised. It is not possible to apply for funding retrospectively.

How to apply

Please send your application by email to the State Government’s Department of Science and Research. Please attach the application form provided there, along with a cost and financial plan. There are two calls for applications per year, with deadlines around 14 October and 15 April. All applications are assessed together once the deadline has passed; therefore, the ‘first come, first served’ principle does not apply.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is narrowly defined: your publication must be the result of research carried out in Styria, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is small compared to open scientific funding schemes. Applications are assessed collectively on the basis of their quality rather than the speed with which they are submitted, and the annual budget of 150,000 EUR is divided amongst several projects. If your work clearly aligns with the Styrian research priority and you submit a well-justified budget, your prospects are good.
