What the JKU thesis-abroad grant gives you

You will receive a monthly allowance to enable you to spend time abroad whilst working on your dissertation. The guide figure is 550 EUR per month. The exact amount depends on your destination country and cannot be guaranteed. If you are travelling outside Europe, you can apply for a travel allowance of up to 500 EUR, or up to 700 EUR for Australia and New Zealand. If you have children, you can apply for an additional 100 EUR per child per month spent abroad. Students with a disability can apply for additional individual support. The grant funds a stay of two weeks to three months for a diploma or Master’s thesis and up to six months for a doctoral thesis. It covers research, interviews, subject-specific courses or a work placement related to your thesis. You choose your host institution abroad yourself: a university, an organisation or a company. The scholarship is awarded by the International Office of Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz in Austria.

Who can apply

• University: You are currently enrolled on a degree programme at JKU Linz.
• Study progress: As part of a Bachelor’s or Diplom degree programme, you have completed at least 2 semesters, earned 40 ECTS credits and completed the introductory phase (STEOP) at JKU. If you are on a Master’s programme, you must have earned at least 20 ECTS credits at JKU, unless you have already completed your Bachelor’s or Diplom degree there.
• Recent activity: In your last two semesters, you have passed examinations totalling at least 16 ECTS or 8 hours per week.
• Thesis approved: The topic of your dissertation has been officially approved, and your supervisor confirms that the trip abroad is necessary.
• Host confirmed: The organisation abroad has confirmed your plan in writing, for example by means of an invitation.
• No double funding: You are not currently receiving Erasmus, Erasmus Mundus, the Austrian study abroad grant or any similar funding, and your project is not eligible for funding under Erasmus+.
• Field of study: Open to all disciplines.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying at JKU Linz.

How to apply

You must submit an online application to the JKU International Office before the start of your stay abroad. You can apply at any time of the year, but there are two deadlines: 1 June for stays beginning between July and December, and 15 November for stays beginning between January and June.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a small group of applicants: you must be studying at JKU Linz, have an approved final-year project, and have found a host organisation abroad. As funding is limited, you should apply early and have the confirmations from your supervisor and the host organisation to hand. If you clearly meet the requirements and your trip cannot be funded through Erasmus+, your chances are good.
