Graz University of Technology (Graz/Austria) - Scholarship for short time academic research

What you get

For a short research stay abroad, you will receive approximately 1,029 EUR per month as well as a travel allowance, the amount of which depends on your destination. The funding covers a period of up to 12 months. Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) pays the grant directly. It covers practical research work for your final thesis: laboratory work, field research or work in archives, libraries and scientific collections. It may also cover subject-specific courses abroad, provided these are clearly relevant to your final thesis. The grant is not intended for conferences or congresses.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at Graz University of Technology. Visiting students are not eligible to apply.
• Level: You are a Master’s student, a student working towards a Diplom degree, a PhD student, or working on your Habilitation (the qualification required to become a professor).
• What the money is for: Your research trip forms part of your Master’s or diploma thesis, your doctoral thesis or your habilitation.
• Field of study: Anyone interested is welcome to apply.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• Where you go: The research must be carried out abroad. You cannot receive funding for research carried out in your home country if it is an OECD member state.
• No double funding: An ERASMUS grant cannot be awarded for the same period of study.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the International Office at Graz University of Technology. There are three application deadlines each year, around 20 October, 5 February and 5 May. Applications are then assessed by an internal committee, which takes into account the quality of your research proposal, your academic record to date and your language skills. PhD theses take precedence over Master’s theses.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is open exclusively to students at Graz University of Technology who are carrying out genuine research abroad for their final thesis; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. You will only be competing with other students from your own university. The committee places particular emphasis on clear, well-justified research proposals. If your project is well-founded and you are working on a final thesis, your chances are good; however, there is no automatic entitlement to funding.
