Benefit

You will receive 2,800 EUR in total, paid in monthly instalments over eight months (approximately 350 EUR per month). Even after the funding year has ended, the foundation will continue to support your artistic development. The prize is awarded by the private Wolfgang Boesch Foundation, which was established in Vienna in 2000 to support highly talented music students. Only two students are selected for funding each year.

Eligibility

• Instrument: You’re learning to play the piano, violin, viola or cello.
• Where you study: You are studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw). Students from other music colleges in Vienna have also received funding.
• Age: You are no older than 27.
• Grades: You have achieved outstanding results in your studies.
• Financial need: You need financial support for your studies.
• Non-smoker: You do not smoke.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

There is also a separate prize, Benjamin Prize, for the best pupil in the second learning phase, with an age limit of 23.

How to apply

You cannot apply directly. Your professor puts you forward, and a jury of renowned musicians decides who receives the prize. It is awarded once a year.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is given to very few people: only two students receive it each year, and it is restricted to just four instruments. You cannot apply yourself; instead, you must be nominated by a professor. The key factor is that your teacher recognises you as an outstanding musician who also needs support. If a professor nominates you and you clearly meet the criteria, you have a real chance, but the number of places is very limited.
