About this scholarship

DAAD scholarships for Austrians in Germany

You will receive a monthly scholarship to study or undertake research in Germany. It is paid by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and funded by the Federal Foreign Office. The amount depends on the specific programme:

  • Master's study grant: 992 euros per month for a full Master’s or postgraduate programme, for 10 to 24 months, depending on the duration of your course.
  • Research grant: 1,400 euros per month for a research placement. PhD students receive funding for 2 to 12 months, whilst postdoctoral researchers receive funding for 2 to 6 months.

In addition to the monthly stipend, you will receive health, accident and third-party liability insurance, a flat-rate travel allowance upon application, and an annual study or research grant of 460 EUR. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for a rent allowance, family allowance, subsidised language courses and a ‘Green Mobility’ allowance for sustainable travel. The scholarship does not need to be repaid. It does not cover tuition fees.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the DAAD portal at my.daad.de. The application window opens every year on 1 June and remains open until the application deadline for the relevant programme, which is set by the DAAD each year. An independent selection committee will then assess your grades, the quality of your study or research project, your potential and your social commitment.
