What you get

You will receive a one-off scholarship of 2,500 EUR to fund a study project abroad at a leading international institution in the fields of education, science or research. The Federation of Austrian Industries awards this scholarship through the Dr Franz Josef Mayer-Gunthof Foundation. In the year 2026, a total of around 8,000 EUR will be awarded: two scholarships of 2,500 EUR each are expected, plus a further 3,000 EUR, which will be distributed depending on the quality of the applications.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a citizen of an EU country.
• University: You are enrolled at an Austrian university.
• Study phase: You’re about to finish your degree.
• Your project: You are writing an academic paper on a topic in the fields of economics, natural sciences or engineering.
• Economic focus: If your topic is of an economic nature, you must demonstrate that you are learning a new foreign language, specifically the language of one of the newer EU Member States.
• Science focus: If your topic is of an academic nature, it must be in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, metallurgy or process engineering, and you must have completed part of your degree at a recognised foreign university.

How to apply

Please send a covering letter, your CV, the completed application form and your certificates to the Foundation’s office at the Federation of Austrian Industries in Vienna. The entire application, including attachments, must not exceed 10 A4 pages. The deadline for applications is 9 October.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. Applicants must be nearing the end of their degree, be working on a specific topic and either be learning a language of a new EU Member State or – in the field of natural sciences – have studied abroad in one of the five specified subject areas. This keeps the pool of applicants small, meaning that a well-suited candidate has a strong chance of success. As only a handful of scholarships are awarded each year, a clear, well-reasoned application is of the utmost importance.
