What you get

Your course fees are covered in full for a three-week summer school in Slovak language and culture. It takes place every year in August in Bratislava (the ‘Studia Academica Slovaca’). The fee covers tuition, three meals a day, accommodation and a programme of cultural activities and excursions. You will be required to make a contribution of 220 EUR towards the organisational costs. You will also be responsible for your own travel costs and for taking out your own accident and health insurance for the duration of your stay. The programme is run by ‘Aktion Österreich – Slowakei’, a joint fund that promotes academic cooperation between Austria and Slovakia. In the info box, the amount is stated as 0 EUR, as the fee is covered and not paid out to you.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a student or a PhD candidate.
• University: You are studying at a public university, a private university, a university of applied sciences or a university of teacher education in Austria.
• Active study: You have earned at least 5 ECTS credits in the last semester or are actively engaged in research.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The key requirement is that you are studying at an eligible Austrian higher education institution.
• Preference: Your chances are better if you have not yet received a grant for a summer language course at the same level of study.

How to apply

Please apply online at www.scholarships.at by 30 April. Please include a letter of motivation and proof of enrolment. A letter of recommendation from a university lecturer is optional. The board of ‘Aktion Österreich – Slowakei’ will make its decision based on your application documents; therefore, there will be no interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is strictly limited: only students at Austrian universities who are actively pursuing their studies and wish to attend a specific summer school are eligible. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you clearly meet these criteria, can explain how learning the Slovak language relates to your degree programme, and have not yet received funding for a summer course, your chances are good.
