Austrian Working Group for urban history research - Studiengeld für Stadtgeschichte

Benefit

For an outstanding Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis on Austrian urban history, you will receive a one-off prize of 1,500 EUR. Two prizes, each worth 1,500 EUR, will be awarded. These are recognition awards for completed theses, not monthly scholarships. They are awarded jointly by the Austrian Association of Towns and Cities and the Austrian Working Group for Urban History Research every two years in even-numbered years.

Eligibility

• Type of work: You have written a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis which has been marked and approved within the last three years.
• Topic: Your dissertation focuses on urban history and examines an Austrian town, either on its own or in comparison with other towns.
• Grade: Your final dissertation was awarded a mark of at least ‘Good’.
• Who submits: You are submitting your own dissertation.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• University: Graduates from all universities are eligible to apply, provided that their chosen topic and grade point average meet the requirements.

How to apply

Please email your final project to the organisers. The deadline for submissions for the current round is 31 October 2026. A panel of judges will assess all submitted projects and select two winners.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize has very strict eligibility criteria. Only final-year dissertations on Austrian urban history that have been awarded a grade of at least ‘Good’ are eligible, meaning that the pool of eligible entries is small. If your final dissertation clearly meets the criteria in terms of both subject matter and mark, you will be competing against a limited number of entrants for one of just two prizes, which makes your prospects very promising indeed. A compelling, clearly focused final dissertation on an Austrian town will stand out in particular.
