Austrian society of surgery - Hospitation scholarship

What you get

You will receive financial support to spend time in another surgical department in Austria or abroad, where you can observe and learn. This will enable you to familiarise yourself with new methods of diagnosis and treatment. As a guide, the grant covers approximately 1,000 EUR per month for your stay, as well as a one-off sum of 800 EUR for travel expenses. The exact amount is decided by the Executive Board on a case-by-case basis. The funds are provided by the Austrian Society for Surgery (ÖGCH), the professional association of surgeons in Austria.

Who can apply

• Your job: You are a surgeon undergoing training or further training.
• Membership: You are a full member of the Austrian Society for Surgery (ÖGCH).
• Field: You work in surgery or one of its sub-specialities.
• Where you go: A surgical department in Austria or abroad has agreed to admit you.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are members of the ÖGCH.
• Host confirmation: You have received a written invitation from the unit where you wish to undertake a work shadowing placement.
• Supervisor backing: The head of your clinic or department will write a letter in support of you.

How to apply

Please email your application to the Secretary-General of the ÖGCH before the start of your stay. Please include your CV, the topic, scope, duration and estimated costs, as well as a statement from your supervisor and confirmation from the host institution. The Executive Committee will make a decision at its next meeting. The usual submission deadlines are 1 February, 1 May and 1 September.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a narrowly defined target group: surgeons in training who are already full members of the ÖGCH. The pool of potential applicants is therefore small. If you belong to this group and can demonstrate a clear plan as well as a confirmed host department, your chances are good. Please apply well in advance of your planned stay, as the Executive Board will not vote on the matter until its next scheduled meeting.
