About this grant / loan
What you get
You will receive a one-off travel allowance of up to 2,000 EUR for a research trip abroad or up to 1,000 EUR for a trip within Austria. This grant covers costs not covered by your other funding and may only be claimed once during your PhD. The funds are provided by the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna) via two university foundations. You may use it to attend a doctoral course at a recognised university or research institution, to present your own paper at an academic conference related to your doctoral thesis, or to visit another institution which has invited you to work on your doctoral thesis, or to conduct research and collect data for your doctoral thesis.
Who can apply
- Level: You are a PhD student at WU Vienna and are working on your doctoral thesis.
- Progress: You have completed seminars totalling at least 30 ECTS credits. Students specialising in Business Law must instead complete at least 3 of the 5 compulsory seminars, including one relating to the topic of their final dissertation.
- Thesis plan: Your principal supervisor has approved your research proposal. This is not required for PhD students specialising in finance or DIBT students.
- Field of study: Open to all WU doctoral programmes in the fields of economics, social sciences, finance and business law.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
- Other funding: You must declare any other funding you have received or applied for. This scholarship will then cover the shortfall resulting from your other funding.
How to apply
Please submit your application to the WU Doctoral Office at any time – either before or after your trip. There is no fixed deadline. Decisions on applications are made once a year in October.
How realistic are your chances?
Only PhD students at WU Vienna who have already reached the progress milestone are eligible to apply; the pool of eligible candidates is therefore small. There is no legal entitlement to the scholarship, and its award depends on the funds available. The key factor is a convincing, well-planned travel itinerary that is relevant to your doctoral thesis. If you meet the credit point requirements and can demonstrate that your other sources of funding leave a genuine shortfall, your chances are good.
