About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a one-off grant of 10,000 EUR (gross) to complete your PhD in Chemistry. This is a lump sum, not a monthly payment, covering a period of 6 to 12 months. The funding is intended to help you complete your doctoral thesis and is specifically intended to finance a research stay abroad during this period. Should you complete your PhD before the end of the funding period, you may use the remaining months to prepare publications. The grant is provided by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) in collaboration with Springer-Verlag and the Society of Austrian Chemists (GÖCH). It is funded from the proceeds of the journal ‘Monatshefte für Chemie – Chemical Monthly’.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are a PhD student and are working on your thesis.
  • Field: Your work relates to any area of chemistry.
  • Where you study: You are doing a PhD at a university in Austria.
  • How far along: You must have started your PhD programme no more than three years ago, counting from the application deadline.
  • Time left: You only need another 12 months to complete your PhD thesis.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The only requirement is that the course must be taken in Austria.
  • Exceptions: The deadlines may be extended if you have care responsibilities, are unwell or have a disability. Please check this with the ÖAW before submitting your application.

How to apply

You should apply to the ÖAW via the online form and upload your documents in German or English. The application deadline is 31 March. An awards committee comprising members of the ÖAW and the GÖCH will reach a decision within approximately two months – usually in May or June – and will notify you of the outcome in writing.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very narrowly defined. You must be an early-stage PhD student in chemistry at an Austrian university who is nearing completion of your degree, which means that the pool of eligible candidates remains small. As a rule, only one scholarship is awarded each year, so the decision depends on the quality of your PhD project and your academic performance to date. Please note that no call for applications has been published for 2026. You should therefore check whether the programme is still running before making any plans based on it.
