Taiwan Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES)

You will receive a monthly scholarship (a living allowance) of about 826 EUR (NTD 28,000) to study Mandarin Chinese (“Huayu”) at a language centre affiliated to a Taiwanese university or college. The grant may be awarded for up to 12 months. The funding comes from the Taiwanese Ministry of Education. You will be responsible for covering your own travel expenses, tuition fees and health insurance.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a national of Austria, Slovenia or Croatia.
• Age: You are at least 18.
• Education: You have completed secondary school or a degree course.
• Grades: You have an excellent academic record.
• Where you study: You are attending a Mandarin language centre at a Taiwanese university or college. You do not need to enrol on a full degree programme.
• No current Taiwan ties: You do not hold a Taiwanese passport and are currently neither studying Chinese nor undertaking a degree course in Taiwan.
• No earlier Taiwan award: You have not yet received this scholarship, a TUSA Global Ambassador scholarship or a Taiwan scholarship.
• No other Taiwan funding: You are not currently receiving a scholarship from a Taiwanese government agency or educational institution.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Taiwan Scholarship Portal by 15 April. Applicants from Austria, Slovenia and Croatia should apply via the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vienna. Shortlisted candidates will take part in a brief online interview via webcam in May. If you have registered for the TOCFL Chinese language test, you will be given priority.

How realistic are your chances?

This round is open exclusively to citizens of Austria, Slovenia and Croatia, so the pool of applicants is small. If you clearly meet the requirements, apply early and register for the TOCFL test to be given priority, your chances are good. Good grades and a convincing study plan for your stay in Taiwan are what set applicants apart from the rest.
