University of Vienna (Vienna/Austria) - Merit scholarship

Benefit

A one-off payment of EUR 125 per academic year, awarded solely on the basis of academic results and not subject to any income limit. The exact amount depends on how the annual budget is allocated across the degree programmes: if a large number of eligible students are competing for the same funding pool, the individual grant amounts may be lower if the funds are exhausted. The Student Services Office at the University of Vienna awards this scholarship from federal funds.

Eligibility

• University: You are enrolled at the University of Vienna.
• Degree level: You are studying on a Bachelor’s, Master’s, Diplom or PhD programme. For Bachelor’s, Master’s and Diplom programmes, you may apply once per academic year. You may only apply for a PhD programme once you have completed your degree.
• Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
• Grades: Between 1 October and 30 September, you have earned at least 40 ECTS credits – or completed your degree – with an ECTS-weighted grade point average of 1.70 or higher (on the Austrian 1–5 scale, where 1 is the highest mark). If your degree programme requires a final dissertation, this must be awarded the mark 1 (‘Very Good’); the final examination must be awarded the mark 1 or 2 (‘Very Good’ or ‘Good’).
• Study duration: You are within the standard duration of study for your degree programme or have an approved reason for exceeding it.
• Nationality: You are an Austrian national, an EU/EEA citizen or a Swiss national. Nationals from non-EEA countries are also eligible if they have had their permanent residence in Austria for at least five years without interruption, hold recognised refugee status, are family members of an EU/EEA citizen who is employed or self-employed in Austria, or are family members of an Austrian national.

The call for applications is issued once a year during the winter semester; the exact deadline will be announced in the call for applications and is expected to be in mid-September 2026 for the academic year 2025/2026.
