Support scholarship of the University of Innsbruck

You will receive a grant of one-off payment of up to 3,600 EUR (from 750 EUR) towards the costs of your final thesis. The University of Innsbruck pays this grant to support your research work. The money covers specific costs associated with writing your bachelor’s thesis, master’s thesis or doctoral thesis, such as travel expenses for fieldwork or additional research expenditure. Books will only be funded if you hand them over to the university library once your thesis is complete. This is a one-off payment, not a monthly grant. Living costs, tuition fees, the binding of your thesis, chemicals, durable equipment or staff salaries are not covered.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled on a standard degree programme at the University of Innsbruck.
• Your thesis: You are writing a bachelor’s thesis, a master’s thesis or a doctoral thesis that has already been registered but has not yet been completed.
• Nationality: You are an Austrian citizen, a citizen of an EEA country (the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), a stateless person or a person treated as such under the Austrian Student Finance Act.
• Timing: You are still within the standard period of study plus one grace semester. Involvement in the student union extends the standard period of study by a further semester; however, employment or a second degree programme does not.
• Grades: Your performance is above average. Most faculties set a minimum grade point average threshold, usually 2.0 (on the Austrian grading scale, where 1 is the highest mark), although the law permits up to 2.5.
• Supervisor's report: A university lecturer must confirm in writing that your project is eligible for funding and that you are capable of carrying it out with above-average success.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the LFU:online student portal during one of the following two periods: from 4 to 22 May 2026, or from 14 September to 2 October 2026. You must attach a description of your final thesis, a cost breakdown signed by your supervisor and a funding plan. The decision is made by the Dean of Studies at your faculty.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must be studying in Innsbruck, have a thesis registered but not yet completed, adhere to the standard duration of study, and meet the grading requirements of your department. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you clearly meet these conditions and your supervisor supports a well-thought-out research plan, your prospects are good.
