Federal Aid for Students - Mobility Grant (Mobilitätsstipendium)

You will receive a monthly grant of up to about 679 EUR to cover the entire duration of your studies abroad. This applies to studies within the European Economic Area (the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), in Switzerland or in the United Kingdom. The grant covers the standard duration of your degree programme plus one additional semester. The exact amount depends on your family’s income and may therefore be less than the maximum amount. The grant is awarded by the Austrian Student Finance Agency and is intended for students who are going abroad for their entire degree programme, not just for an exchange semester.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are completing your entire Bachelor’s, Master’s or Diplom degree at a state-recognised higher education institution in the EEA, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. Doctoral programmes and distance-learning programmes offered from Austria do not count.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• School-leaving qualification: You have obtained your university entrance qualification (Matura) in Austria.
• Residence: You had your main residence in Austria for at least five years before you started your degree.
• Nationality: You are an Austrian citizen or a foreign national or a stateless person who is treated as equivalent under the Austrian Student Financial Aid Act.
• Study phase: You have not yet completed a university degree or equivalent qualification. Exception: After completing a Bachelor’s degree, you may still be eligible for funding for a subsequent Master’s programme.
• Financial need: Your family’s income falls within the limits applicable to the Austrian student grant.
• Progress: You will earn at least 30 ECTS credits per year (15 credits for the first instalment in the first year).
• Age: You began your degree programme before reaching the age limit set out in the Austrian Student Financial Aid Act.
• No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other benefits under the Austrian Student Financial Aid Act.

How to apply

Once a year, you must submit an application to the Scholarships Office, stating your most recent Austrian residential address, either online using ID Austria or by completing a form. You can submit your application from 1 March for the coming academic year until the end of February of the year in which that academic year ends.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a specific target group. You must have passed your Matura, have been resident in Austria for at least five years, have an income within the specified limits, and hold a full degree from a foreign university – not just a semester abroad. This significantly narrows down the pool of applicants. If you clearly meet these requirements and earn 30 ECTS credits per year, your chances are good, as the scholarship is awarded according to a fixed formula rather than through a competitive process for a limited number of places.
